Wide-tube type

In the wide-tube type the coil is wound from tubes with a larger inner diameter than in the other types. It connects on both sides by flanges.

Wide-tube type (SC-W) - 3D model

An alternative when the medium in the tube coil produces a high pressure drop. Whether it fits better than the standard type in a given case is decided by the sizing.

There is no gasket between the media that could age or would need replacing. The unit is cleaned by chemical flushing rather than by brush or lance. If a medium carries solids or fouls heavily, we recommend a filter upstream of the unit or the fully dismountable type.

Design and limits

It belongs to the welded ranges: a stainless steel shell and tube coil, no gasket between the media. Flanged connections on the tube and shell side.

Type designation SC-W
Operating temperature up to 160 °C
Operating pressure up to 16 bar
Connections Flanges on tube and shell side
Tubes plain
Dismountable no

The limits do not necessarily apply at the same time. The sizing and the quote are binding.

Strengths

  • Tube coil wound from tubes with a larger inner diameter than in the other types
  • An alternative when the medium in the tube coil produces a high pressure drop
  • Belongs to the welded ranges: no gasket between the media

Limits

  • Plain tubes only, no profiled version
  • Only the sizing shows whether it fits better than the standard type
  • Cleaned by chemical flushing rather than by brush or lance

Pressure and temperature limits

The types differ in their temperature and pressure limits. The table above gives the values for this type; the comparison shows all types side by side.

The limits do not necessarily apply at the same time. The configurator checks the temperature limit itself during selection; operating pressure and material are fixed in the quote.

Materials

Shell, tube coil and nozzles are made of stainless steel 1.4307 or 1.4404, flanges, where fitted, of painted steel or stainless steel. The quote fixes which material fits.

The hot medium flows through the tube coil, the cold one through the shell. The coil absorbs the different thermal expansion of tube and shell.

When pressure drop sets the limit

If the medium in the tube coil produces a high pressure drop, for example a viscous oil or a high throughput, the wide-tube type can be the better choice: its coil is wound from tubes with a larger inner diameter.

Whether it is in a given case, the sizing decides from your duty, temperatures and permissible pressure drops.

Selection and sizing

You do not have to pick the type in advance. The configurator determines type and size from your operating data: media, temperatures, mass flows and permissible pressure drops. Where the calculation model ends, our team does the sizing, for example with a pressure-drop limit on an oil, glycol or steam side.

Our team reviews the sizing; only the sizing and the quote are binding. The guide explains what the sizing works with.

How does the wide-tube type differ from the standard type?

Its tube coil is wound from tubes with a larger inner diameter, and it has no profiled version. Like the standard type it connects on both sides by flanges.

When is the wide-tube type the better choice?

When the medium in the tube coil produces a high pressure drop. Whether it fits better than the standard type in a given case is decided by the sizing.

How is the wide-tube type cleaned?

By chemical flushing rather than by brush or lance. It belongs to the welded ranges, and there is no gasket between the media.
