Size a shell and tube heat exchanger

Enter the media, the inlet and outlet temperatures of both sides and the duty or one mass flow, together with your limits. Whatever you leave open, the energy balance fills in; our server calculates the sizing against the size catalogue. Where the calculation model ends, for example with a pressure-drop limit on an oil, glycol or steam side, our team does the sizing.

What the configurator calculates as you type

The configurator re-solves the energy balance on every entry. Whatever you leave open it completes from the balance, for example the mass flows of both sides from the four temperatures and the duty; completed values are marked as calculated. The live result also shows the spread of both sides, the log mean temperature difference, and the heat capacity and density of both media.

The fluid properties come from the media catalogue, each at the mean temperature of the side, for steam at the inlet. If steam condenses on the hot side, its mass flow follows from the enthalpy difference between steam at the inlet and condensate at the outlet.

What the configurator checks straight away

It reports when the hot side does not cool down, the cold side does not heat up, or the temperatures cross so that the operating point cannot be reached in counterflow. Under each medium it shows the temperature range covered for it; if a temperature lies outside that range, it reports this as well. As long as one of these errors remains, you cannot go on.

If temperatures, duty or mass flows are missing, on the other hand, we still accept the request and review it manually. If your medium is not in the list, choose “Other medium”: your request then goes to our engineers as a special design.

Which limits you can set

In the second step you can set the permissible pressure drop per side, a minimum area margin and the number of units working in parallel. Everything there is optional; without an entry we calculate with one unit.

The permissible pressure drop helps decide which sizes qualify. The minimum area margin counts the share of the installed area that the duty does not need on paper. More margin means a larger unit; that trade-off belongs in the quote.
