How does a shell and tube heat exchanger work?

Two media exchange heat through the tube wall: one flows through the tubes, the other flows around them in the shell. At Shellcore the tube bundle is a coil of stainless steel tubes wound around a core. The hot medium flows through the coil, the cold one through the shell.

Shell and tube or plate heat exchanger?

Oils and other viscous media, or steam that is to condense, point to the shell and tube design. For water against water the plate heat exchanger is usually the more compact choice. You get both designs from AWS-Technik GmbH.

What is different with oil and steam?

Oil is far more viscous than water and conducts heat less well, so the oil side governs the heat transfer. For the same duty it also needs more mass flow or a larger spread, because oil takes up only about half as much heat per kilogram and kelvin. Condensing steam, by contrast, gives up its enthalpy of vaporisation and gets by with small mass flows; the configurator therefore calculates the steam side from the enthalpy, not from the heat capacity.

What does the sizing need from you?

For both sides the medium and the inlet and outlet temperatures, plus the duty or one mass flow; whatever is missing, the energy balance completes. Please also state the permissible pressure drop per side: it helps decide which sizes qualify. Note solids or heavy fouling in the “Application, particulars” field.

What does the quote contain?

The type and heat transfer area of the unit, plus the operating pressure and material, which we fix in the quote. Before that, our team reviews the sizing; only the sizing and the quote are binding.
