Size shell and tube heat exchangers online

Oil cooling, saturated steam, circuit separation: enter your operating point and the configurator computes the energy balance as you go. If a catalogue model fits, you receive your quote within one to three business days.

High-temperature shell and tube heat exchanger on support legs: stainless steel shell with angled flanged nozzles

For oils and steam

One medium in the tube bundle, the other in the shell: the design copes with viscous oils and condensing steam.

Sizing in the browser

The energy balance follows along as you type, and the sizing is for your operating point — not for a catalogue case.

Quote for catalogue models within one to three business days

If a catalogue model fits, your quote arrives within one to three business days. Special designs are sized by our engineers.

Three steps to your quote

  1. 1

    Enter the process data

Media, inlet and outlet temperatures of both sides, plus the duty or one mass flow. Whatever you leave open, the energy balance fills in visibly as you type.

  2. 2

    Have the sizing reviewed

The server calculates against the size catalogue and our team reviews the result. Where the calculation model ends, the team does the sizing itself.

  3. 3

    Get the quote

If a catalogue model fits, you receive your quote within one to three business days — that is where the type and heat transfer area appear. Special designs are sized by our engineers, who get back to you with a quote.

Types

Shellcore offers ten types, each with its own outer shape. You do not have to pick one in advance: the configurator determines type and size from your operating data.

Why Shellcore

Shellcore sizes for your operating point, not for a catalogue case: media, temperatures, mass flows and permissible pressure drops determine the type and the size. The design comes into its own with oils and condensing steam: viscous media distribute evenly across the tubes, and condensing steam finds room in the bundle. The energy balance follows along as you type, the server sizes against the size catalogue, and our team reviews the result or does the sizing itself where the calculation model ends.

Every type is a tube coil in a stainless steel shell. The coil packs a lot of heat transfer area into a slim shell and absorbs the different thermal expansion of tube and shell. Most ranges are fully welded, with no gasket between the media; for media carrying solids there is a version that can be dismantled. Shell, tube coil and nozzles are made of stainless steel 1.4307 or 1.4404.

How you get to a quote: enter your operating data in the configurator and send it, and we confirm receipt. If a catalogue model fits, you receive your quote within one to three business days - only there do the type and the heat transfer area appear. Special designs are sized by our engineers, who get back to you with a quote. Prefer to talk? Give us a call or write to us, and we will work through the design together.

Part of AWS-Technik GmbH

Shellcore is backed by AWS-Technik GmbH from Düsseldorf, working in heat exchanger technology since the year 2000. The company advises on the sizing of shell and tube heat exchangers, selects size and material from the medium, the duty and the operating conditions of your plant, and procures through vetted manufacturing partners. You submit your enquiry through the configurator and have a German contact person.

You will find more about the parent company at aws-technik.de.

FAQ

How does a shell and tube heat exchanger work?

One medium flows through the tubes (tube side), the other flows around them inside the enclosing shell (shell side); the heat passes exclusively through the tube wall. Our units arrange the tubes as a coil: thin-walled stainless steel tubes wound helically around a core. The hot medium flows through the coil, the cold one through the shell.

Do the two media mix?

No. Tube space and shell space are sealed from one another by tube sheets; only heat crosses over, through the tube wall. In the welded ranges there is also no gasket between the two media.

What information does the sizing need?

The media on both sides, their inlet and outlet temperatures, and either the duty or one of the two mass flows. You do not have to choose the type in advance: the configurator determines type and size from your operating data. You can also state a permissible pressure drop per side; without an entry we design without that limit. The configurator checks a limit on a water side itself; with a limit on an oil, glycol or steam side, our team does the sizing.

Which media can I size for?

Online sizing covers the media shown in the configurator's selection list (saturated steam on the hot side only), each within the temperature range it shows for that medium. For any other medium, or an operating point outside that range, give us a call or write to us - we will work through the design together. Glycol with an inlet or outlet temperature below −20 °C is sized by our team.

What happens after I send my enquiry?

We confirm receipt. If a catalogue model fits, you receive your quote within one to three business days; only there do the type and heat transfer area appear. Special designs are sized by our engineers, who get back to you with a quote.

Who is behind Shellcore?

Shellcore is the shell and tube heat exchanger sales brand of AWS-Technik GmbH, based in Düsseldorf. Shellcore is not a separate legal entity - all contracts are concluded by AWS-Technik GmbH.
